Sogetsu Riji
Ikebana Artist | Educator
Ikebana is a fulfilling and joyful experience from the very first flower. It can also deepen into a long-term practice, as the seasons change and we experience a closer connection with nature. For me, the feelings, sensations and memories evoked by different plants hold a powerful charge, and the process is as meaningful as the outcome.
My studies have continued for over 25 years with mentoring and encouragement from sensei Soho Sakai who set my path as an ikebana artist and educator. There have been many opportunities to develop my style, to exhibit, to work professionally and give back to the ikebana community. Some of these include:
Serving as program chair on the board of Soho Study Group.
Creating ikebana and coordinating the flower committee at Asian Art Museum of San Francisco.
Forming Renka Design Group, a 20 year collaboration with friends to create ikebana installations together.
Flower shows, demonstrations, commissions and above all teaching
I teach the Sogetsu Ikebana curriculum at City College of San Francisco, and San Rafael Community Center. From beginner to advanced student, seeing each person express their creativity through nature is an inspiration.
At gatherings for public, private & professional organizations, I present ikebana workshops for people to experience the beauty of flowers. Please contact me to chat about an ikebana idea or project.
